"Metamorphosis, Fifty-One"
Unexpected patterns emerged on this newly made solid wing, the encaustic iron gliding over the surface of a photo, not yet dry. My grimace turned to grin as I took a breath and saw the striation in the trail of the iron, reminding me to remain open to what may not first be apparent.
These evocative wings are created from beeswax-layered photography, details carved into the thickly-clouded wax surface to bring the wing back to life before being sculpted into expressive new form and colored with powdered pigment.
They are inspired by the process of metamorphosis— a process which repeats itself many times over the course of our lives, offering endless opportunities for change. The Metamorphosis Series celebrates the life force present in each of us as we challenge ourselves to become more fully alive, a prominent theme in this unprecedented time of change.
